Help Your Clients Connect with You

If you’ve worked with me to outline a blog post or a book in the last few years, I asked you to start by writing down words that express how you want your readers to feel after they read your work. These words are very close to the brand words branding coaches ask you to come up with.

Your coaches are not obsessed with making you write lists of words. Instead, we want you to reverse engineer your work. We have you start with feelings because people choose their reading material and their purchases based on feelings, not content or features.

But (there’s always a but), the best list in the world isn’t going to help you inspire that feeling in your reader or client if you haven’t first connected with the word and the feeling behind it.

How can you connect with your feelings?

Since I don’t want you to fall into the trap of overthinking your connection to your feeling words, I’ve developed a 2-hour workshop in which we will spend time connecting with each word through art.

The workshop will be held via Zoom (for obvious reasons). At the beginning, we’ll talk a bit about what words you’ve chosen, how they relate to your business, and how we’re going to use the visual arts to connect with them. Then, I’ll set a timer and you’ll have 30 minutes to decorate a page (or part of a page) with colours/shapes/images that relate to one of your words. We’ll come back together and those who wish to share will show us their creations. Then we’ll repeat the process for words 2 and 3.

After the workshop, I’ll encourage you to post pictures of your masterpieces in the Entrepreneurs’ Writing Club Facebook group.

But I’m not an artist…

You don’t have to be an artist to spend a productive couple of hours putting colours and shapes on paper. You can do this in the form of a collage with pictures you’ve cut from magazines (in which case, you’ll have more prep work than the rest of us). You could also use coloured pencils, crayons, markers, finger paints, … whatever makes you happy.
