First, watch this video. Then, take yourself through a day in the life of your ideal reader. The first time you do this, imagine an ordinary day. Depending on your topic and your ideal reader, it may be useful to repeat the exercise for special days: weekends, holidays, Christmas, wedding day, … For example, someone writing a book to help American teenage girls with body image issues would need to look at days like these: ‘normal’ school day, first day of new school year, shopping trips with her mother, day of the homecoming dance, and so on.

Watch this video and then get creative! For this exercise, you are limited only by your imagination – so let loose and really connect with how you want your reader to feel. If you choose a medium that won’t last (play dough or dance, for example), make sure you record it somehow. Connecting with this emotion today will ignite your passion for your book. Being able to return to it will help you keep that passion strong while you write it!
